Countdown 2.0

So, you've probably seen my own version of Boggle called, 'Word Fighter'. Now, this is my own take on the numbers game as seen on the infamous British game show, 'Countdown'.

For those not familiar with the concept, you have a series of numbers from which you have to perform operations on to attain the target number (or as close to as possible). You aren't able to use the same number twice, however you can use the results of calculations.

This is our most beloved warmer for maths lessons. Essentially it's just a colourful PowerPoint slide into which you can add your own numbers and the number of the total. The timer is an embedded video (courtesy of MrSlenderTV) which is a three minute countdown.

I sometimes have the children select the numbers and the total, other times I choose them myself. Generally they will use the four basic operations unless I'm teaching one of them specifically (then I'll take more time to consider the calculationto suit the purpose). Once the time is up, the children (usually in pairs) come to the front of class to verbally present their answer, if they are spot on or are the closest. More often than not there will be a number of groups that have reached the answer but in different ways. It's always interesting to see the variety of methods and to find the most efficient calculation.

So, without further ado, this is Countdown 2.0! Click here to open in a new tab and then download and run to display properly. Please post a comment if you have any feedback or suggestions. Thanks!
